Indonesia’s Marine biodiversity is richer than previously thought. Current researches have estimated that Indonesia houses more than 500 coral reef species and 2000 coral fish species. However various research methods development may allow this number to escalate in the future.

Indonesian Biodiversity Research Center has strong efforts in descripting taxonomically complex marine species through out Indonesia, Myanmar, Brunei and Philippines. This effort was initiated and supported by marine specialists from University California at Los Angeles, Conservation International and Western Australian Museum. To meet this research purposes IBRC is combining genetic and taxonomic science to study various marine species including pomacentridae, congridae, ptereleotridae and other species
